The Home Pregnancy Test Is the Best Place to Start

If a woman is experiencing the early signs of pregnancy she will want confirmation of this as early as possible. One of the quickest and most convenient methods of achieving this is by using a home pregnancy test. The home pregnancy test is very convenient and discrete and if the test results are positive, an appointment with your pregnancy clinic or doctor can then be made to confirm definitively whether your are pregnant or otherwise. We have to bear in mind that the home pregnancy test is not 100% reliable which is why formal confirmation will be required.

As with any product, the home pregnancy test is available in many different varieties and price ranges but they all work basically on the same way and are looking for the hormone HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in the urine sample.

This hormone is released into the body after an embryo has implanted itself on the uterine wall and will generally occur between six and twelve days after ovulation. HCG will rapidly multiply in the woman’s body but at a greater rate in the early stages of pregnancy. Given that the home pregnancy test is seeking out this hormone, the longer into pregnancy you leave the test, the more accurate it will be.

There are some home pregnancy tests that claim to be more sensitive and can detect HCG and pregnancy as early as 7 days after ovulation. However, it is a recommendation that the home pregnancy test should not be taken until at least the time that the normal menstrual cycle is due. The chances of an accurate test result will therefore be increased.

Proper Use of a Home Pregnancy Test

Each test will vary e.g. some require the test stick to be emerged in a receptacle whilst others require the test stick to be held in the urine stream. The levels of HCG in a woman’s body are greater first thing in the morning. The home pregnancy test instructions will probably therefore recommend undertaking the test at this time

Whatever the manufacturer suggests you should always follow the home pregnancy test instructions very closely to improve accuracy. The results of the home pregnancy test are usually available within a few minutes and some test sticks will also confirm whether or not the test has been conducted in accordance with the manufacturers’ guidelines.

If the result of your home pregnancy test is positive, give that they cannot be 100% accurate, it is essential to have the result confirmed with your pregnancy clinic or doctor who will then be able to advise you have the pre-natal care available.
